Originating from a dissertation, the essay considers the possibilities and limitations of modern day type design. The practical highlights the positives digitalization has brought to type design:

Traditionally an exclusive skillset, easily accessible tools democratised the industry, allowing type designers to work independently, with no previous craft skills. Font design software is also cheaper & easier to use than ever. OpenType allows the inclusion of over 65,000 characters. These include functional characters (like multi-scripts), and aesthetic options (like ligatures and swashes). Digital formats also allow globally filesharing. Originating from a Victorian inscription with 18 characters, Clothworker contains multi-scripts, ligatures, ornaments, borders and more.
